Abstract

Abstract. At a hundred, David Attenborough has been seen by more people, in more languages, than anyone else who has tried to explain the natural world, and he has left behind a filmed record of the living planet with no real equal. Most tributes pick out the highlights; this one maps the whole of it. This article follows his life through five working phases, from the young collector to the old man giving evidence on the planet’s decline, and sets down in plain tables the films, the books, the honours, and the fifty-odd species that now carry his name. It ends with an argument for this journal’s readers: that the information professions have catalogued and opened almost every other body of important knowledge but not yet his, and that doing so, and putting it into the hands of the young, may be the most useful tribute we could now pay.

  • Sabarish Karunakaran, Kerala State IT Mission
    Sabarish Karunakaran is presently Head, E-governance at Kerala State Information Technology Mission, has held various positions including Chief Scientist & Head of Information Systems Division, Kerala State Council for Science Technology and Environment; Director International Center for Free and Open Source Software; Head of eGovernance and Mission Coordinator at Kerala State IT Mission; Systems Manager at KPSC, KSCSTE etc. Has over 30 years of experience in the field of Digital Transformation of Public Service Delivery. Was successful in conceptualizing and implementing various pioneering E-Governance and Mobile-Governance projects in Kerala and helped many developing countries to adopt such technologies. He was responsible for numerous path breaking projects for the State and Central governments in India like architecting and implementing the first Comprehensive mobile governance project (2009), which received International acclaim. He stands for open source technologies which most of his project also utilise. Conceived and implemented the first comprehensive E-health project in India at Kerala funded by the World Bank (2013). Was instrumental in implementing Digital Transformation of Kerala Public Service Commission (KPSC), was a member of the Working Group on IT, State Planning Board (2012-17), served as State Nodal Officer of Digital India Initiative of Govt of india and continues in various Technical Committees of the Govt, and is also visiting faculty for IMG, IIITMK, and Digital University of Kerala. He was a key note Speaker at various Conferences in India and abroad and is Member of various professional bodies. He has to his credit many awards and 25+ international and national publications. His current pursuits include converting Kerala's inherent challenges to opportunities, aligning with Digital India initiative of the Federal Government. He holds a Doctoral Degree in Computer Applications, and Masters Degrees in Business Administration, and Computer Application.
