Abstract

Human civilization has developed diverse systems to preserve and transmit knowledge, evolving from oral traditions to manuscripts and modern digital technologies. Early writing systems such as cuneiform and hieroglyphs enabled the recording of administrative, religious, and cultural information, marking a major shift from memory-based transmission to written documentation. Across regions including Africa, India, East Asia, and the Middle East, diverse languages and scripts emerged, enriching global intellectual heritage while also creating challenges for documentation, reproduction, and technological standardization. Manuscripts written on materials such as palm leaves, papyrus, parchment, and paper played a central role in preserving scientific, literary, and spiritual traditions. The development of printing and later digital technologies transformed knowledge dissemination but introduced technical difficulties in representing complex scripts. The emergence of Unicode and advances in digital typography, Optical Character Recognition, and artificial intelligence now provide a foundation for multilingual computing, digital preservation, and improved access to the world’s diverse textual heritage.

    Dr. K H Hussain is a computing expert and typeface designer from Kerala, India, and a pioneer in the early development of Malayalam computing. At a time when digital tools for Malayalam were scarce, he entered the field by designing his own Malayalam font and text editor, contributing significantly to the language’s digital adoption. His work helped advance the representation of Malayalam in modern computing environments. He was honored with Dr. Pradeepan Pampirikunnu Memorial Mathrubhasha (Mother Tongue) Award, instituted by Sree Sankaracharya University of Sanskrit, Kalady, and Kerala State e-Governance Award by i the Government of Kerala in recognition of his contributions to Malayalam language technology.

    Sabarish Karunakaran is Head of E-Governance at the Kerala State Information Technology Mission, with over 30 years of experience in digital transformation of public service delivery. Held key positions including Chief Scientist and Head of the Information Systems Division at KSCSTE and Director of the International Centre for Free and Open Source Software. Has led pioneering e-Governance and m-Governance initiatives, including India’s first comprehensive mobile governance project (2009) and Kerala’s World Bank-funded e-Health programme (2013). Is a strong advocate of open-source technologies and has authored over 25 publications.
